Hot update
Posted on February 10th, 2010 3 commentsAs noted around the net today, Halverson intends to re-launch GameFan.
A lot more buzz seems to be focused on EGM, and it’s not much of a mystery why — EGM is a pretty new concept and it has something of an all-star staff, while the new GameFan is basically more of the same from Halverson, a mag that combines elements of Play and Geek Monthly into something that sounds a bit like — dare I say it? — PiQ. I’m not too optimistic that the market for PiQ is any better now than it was two years ago.

is it gallows humor which caused you to link to a site called “games abyss”?

I’d like to think there’s still some kind of market for this proposed split format, but you’re probably right. Since it’s going to be published under the GameFan banner, I wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up leaning pretty heavily towards games.
Plus, the dual cover/theme isn’t anything new. Complex has been doing that for about seven years now with their split focus on music and style, usually with a musician on one cover and an actress/babe on the other.
I don’t get why it’s gotta be so damn big though. 12″ x 10″? Yeesh.
