It won't sell 5 million units.
However it has a chance to surpass the DQ7 sales thus becoming the most successful DQ ever in Japan.

I'm more curious how it will do in Europe and North America.
Allegedly Nintendo should help SE to market the game in those territories.
I hope it start to sell good in those markets cause DQ is the only JRPG serie I follow these days.

well, skimming the comments on ds mk2, it looks like people complain that the main story is short and boring, the battles are too slow, and the 3d art is poor. even the high-scoring reviewers seem to mention these.

there's also some series-specific complaints about the job system and there not being a casino, but i can't make heads or tails of it since i haven't played a dragon quest game before.

according to wikipedia:
"Since the day of the game's launch, it has largely received mixed to highly negative responses from fans on the Internet, particularly towards Sandy the gyaru-ish fairy.[18] Kotaku Night Editor Brian Ashcraft believes[weasel words] "this could very well be an organized effort...to slam" the game.[19]"

strangely, roughly half of the citations on the wikipedia page for Dragon Quest IX are Kotaku articles.

I have a huge suspicion that the negative reviews are the work of a bunch of trolls, but I've been reluctant to seek out actual information.

So, I have to ask: What shortcomings/flaws in DQIX have the hoi polloi been venting about?

they sure are handing out the 40s to the sure bets. remember when vagrant story could get a 40? i would disagree with the game deserving it, which in an odd way, makes me respect the score more.
